I wanted to add a “Verse of the Day” to our campus digital signage, but I didn’t want to have to manually create a list of verses to pull from. I know that it’s not that hard to do, but I wanted to use a service that already exists.

I love the team at <a href="http://www important source.crossway.org/bibles/” target=”_blank”>Crossway Bibles. They upped the ante for all Bible publishers by creating the ESV API for developers, way back in 2003. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s pretty cool.

Not only have they opened up an API to developers, but they also provide a great, curated verse of the day feature.

So, I made a quick and simple script to generate a CSV from their API.

Go ahead, download esv-api-daily-verse-csv today. You won’t regret it!

What do I do with it?

First, you’ll want to host this PHP file on a Web server that your signage players can access. This Web server does not have to be accessible to the public, but it does need to be able to get content from the Internet (since we’re getting the verse from the ESV API).

Second, if you use Four Winds, create a Live Data content item. You’ll want to use “Separated text…” as the data format. The defaults are A-OK, so just select OK when the popup appears.

From there, all you have to do is tinker with your Layout until you are satisfied.

Please make sure to play by the rules. Details on the ESV license are available on their site.
